Demonstration by Paula Birbeck – 17 Sept 2016 Paula always begins her paintings with a value sketch Gauze is applied to the watercolour paper in positions of the roses. Watercolour paint is painted over the gauze which when dry will create rose shapes. The initial painting showing the gauze effects. Once the gauze is removed, more watercolour is added to start building up the detail in the painting. More leaves and details are added. Detail of the dark background and roses. Detail of the texture created by the gauze. Paula ‘scrubs out’ some areas using a cut out stencil and a toothbrush Detail The completed demo painting A completed painting by Paula Birbeck
